After college, one of my first jobs was with an architectural sign company, which used CorelDraw. I consider myself lucky to have learned to use the software. Corel had some amazing features not found in Illustrator such as the ability to set your Scale so you don't outgrow your artboard (which I believe is a 3rd party add on for Illustrator), and the ability to quickly clip pictures by manipulating the surrounding nodes with the Shape Tool, and the list goes on...Adobe has great software which I have used extensively over the last 15 years, there is no question about it. However, I am amazed at the value that the CorelDraw suite offers... especially given the price point at almost 1/4 the cost. The beautiful 300+ page book that comes with the suite is fantastic (a whole chapter on colors spaces? How awesome is that to have as a reference no matter what level you are as a designer). I've been using Photoshop for years. I currently have CS5 which I bought after my wife (an art teacher) took a continuing education class on Photoshop and wanted to play with it more. She was an Illustration major so she was familir with most Adobe products like Photoshop and Illustrator. She had also used an older Corel Draw program about 10+ years ago paired with a drawing tablet on her old PC.I was excited to give this suite a try. I have tried a few other Corel programs in the last few years but they were more video editing and PDF progrmas (the PDF program is awesome). I run a decent cdesktop computer with an AMD Phenom x6 Black Editions chip running at 3.2ghz and 2gb of dedicated video RAM through a GeForce card. Not state of the art but fast enough for most applications. Install took about 12 minutes from inserting the disc to completion. Rather long but I chose to install the full disc with every option. New - 'Object Properties Docker' is a productivity enhancer for illustrating repetitive frames We use CorelDraw for editing video frames shot in high speed, reduced to time scaled slow'mo by sampling (not Corel), followed by Corel image editing adding significant amounts of overlayed technical data/instrument readings. This is (for now) accomplished frame by frame for scientific demonstration/presentation of 5-10 sec video clips. Our Corel use is not quite akin to creative or graphic art.
